This year, 2015, marks the official launch of the Non-Monogamies and Contemporary Intimacies, a project intended to be continued and replicated in the upcoming years, in other places. More than a single conference, we aim to create a platform to encourage European and worldwide research on (consensual) non-monogamies and other under-researched topics dealing with contemporary intimacies, like asexuality and a-romanticism.

Among the issues we are concerned about, we can list the following:

  • Research around the lived experiences of non-monogamies, especially those considered consensual;
  • Ideological and representational changes in how intimacies are thought of;
  • Intersections with race, sex-gender, sexual orientation, kinship, kink, sex work, class, culture, religion, dis/ability, asexuality, a-romanticism
  • Activism and community-building around non-monogamies;
  • Reproduction of normativities and resistances: polynormativity and relationship anarchy, neo-liberalism and political contestation;
  • Evolution of scientific discourses on non-monogamies;
  • Challenges to counseling, psychotherapy, (public) health and legal frameworks around non-monogamies;
  • The roles of mass media and new technologies around transformations of intimacy.

The International Organizing Committee gathers a multitude of researchers from around the world, and this year’s Conference is co-organized by two Portuguese research centers: CICS.NOVA and CES – Center for Social Studies (through the research project INTIMATE). The conference will be hosted by the Faculty of Social and Human Sciences of the New University of Lisbon.

Available Rooms

The Conference Organization has set aside a few rooms in a few time slots. If you are part of the Conference and wish to propose an informal activity which would make use of one of these rooms, please contact the Conference Organization via email, and send a detailed proposal for such activity, including:

  • objective;
  • main target audience;
  • coherence with the Conference objectives;
  • expected participation;
  • specific technical requirements.

Please be mindful that any event must per force take place within any of these rooms. These are teaching rooms at a university, and therefore equipped as such (for more information seehere). During the duration of the activity, the proponent will be responsible for the space allotted to them. Any activities must also follow our Guidelines for Academic/Activist Spaces.

1st NMCI Pre-Launch Party

The Conference Organization is putting together an exciting Pre-Launch event, starting at around 6:00PM (18:00) on the 24th!

This event will be a joint collaboration between the Non-Monogamies and Contemporary Intimacies Conference Organization and the Portuguese feminist association UMAR – União de Mulheres Alternativa e Resposta.

The event will be held at the Center for Feminist Culture and Intervention (CCIF), HERE (Google Maps link; street-level view). To see how to get there, please check this page.

Among other activities, we will have:

  • An overview of the Non-Monogamies and Contemporary Intimacies concept and what the International Organization Committee foresees for future years;
  • A short presentation of all the people involved in preparing this Conference, both at the national and international level;
  • An open debate around the principles for shared academic/activist spaces, around our  “Guidelines” document;;
  • Food and drinks (vegan-friendly);
  • A chance to meet up before the conference, to connect, to share help and resources;
  • and…

Closing Party

The Conference’s closing party will take place at Mob Lisboa, and we’ll get things started at 9:30 pm, so you have time to grab some dinner beforehand!

Dance to music, grab a bite, talk to people post-conference, hang out, or just chill – this very welcoming space is going to host us until midnight, just so everybody has a change to socialize a bit before returning home!

How do I get there?

It’s really easy! The place is right next to the Intendente metro station – see the map here, and you’ll notice “Intendente” just to the left of the place.

The Intendente metro station is part of the green line.

Taking the conference venue as a reference point, you can:

  • Enter Campo Pequeno (Yellow Line) and board towards Odivelas, switching lines at Campo Grande to the Green Line, where you’d then board the train headed towards Cais do Sodré, exiting at Intendente (more info here).
  • Enter Praça de Espanha (Blue Line), board towards Santa Apolónia, switch lines at Baixa-Chiado to the Green line, board the train headed to Telheiras and exit at Intendente.

We at the Non-Monogamies and Contemporary Intimacies Conference practice a tiered fee system that attempts to take into consideration the social and economic inequalities that academics, activists and artists face in different places of the globe.

These are the various tiers available. The prices listed below encompass the full Conference, with the first two reserved for those who are presenters and/or co-authors, and the final one reserved for people who only intend to watch the conference as part of the audience.

PLEASE NOTE: the non-author, attendance-only fee does not allow the attendee to present or co-author at the Conference, and does not accumulate with the other fees.

In order to register for the Conference, you will need to fill out the form linked to at the end of this page. Before you do that, please bear in mind that:

  • There are two sepparate means of payment (beyond on-site payment) – one for those within the European Union (bank transfer) and another for those outside the European Union (PayPal payment). If you are paying from inside the European Union, please do notuse PayPal. Please check the fees here.
  • To complete the registration process you must email us the proof of payment, preferably sent from the same email in which you will indicate on the form at the end of this page. If you do not do this, we will be unable to confirm your registration. The email must be sent to nmciconference@gmail.com
  • If you have selected a student fee, please send proof of student status (like a copy of your student card) along with the proof of payment. The email must be sent to nmciconference@gmail.com ; again, please check which fee applies to you, here.
  • If you need a payment receipt: you must send, in the same email where you send the proof of payment, your full name, address, and fiscal identity number (where applicable). If the payment receipt is to an institution, then the same elements are required. Except when previously requested, there will be no on-site immediate receipts.
  • Attendance and presentation certificates will be handed out only in-person at the end of the Conference; if you need to leave the Conference sooner, please notify the on-site staff in advance.
  • The attendance-only fee for non-authors and non-presenters does not require registration.

Logistics and Presentations

IT and Audio-visual equipment

All rooms are equipped with:

  • A desktop PC running Windows 7, connected to a…

  • Sound system connected to the PC
  • A video input for you to connect your laptop to the data projector (standard VGA plug, no Mac adapters; sound is standard 2.5mm jack)

  • Windows Media Player

If you have any specific software requirements beyond this, please notify the Conference Organization as soon as possible!

To make sure there are no delays in making your presentation available at the Conference computers, and that everything runs smoothly, please submit your presentation via the link that will already sent by the Organization to authors and presenters. If you did not receive an email concerning your file submission, please get in touch with the Conference Organization. If your presentation is a short or long movie, please contact the Organization directly. Even if you submitted your presentation through the link provided, please bring it along with you in a USB pen, so that any last minute problems can be avoided.

If you have sent a short submission, please aim to present your work in 18 minutes (20 minutes is the absolute maximum). Session moderators will strictly enforce these time limits, please respect them! This is the only way to have enough time for discussion after the presentations.

Conference staff will be available at the venue to help out with any trouble you run into, especially with anything having to do with troubleshooting computer problems.

Information for the Submission Process

As outlined in our Call for Contributions, there are several types of submission that can be made through our submission platform, each of them involving different details. Several different possibilities are listed below, but it’s not mandatory for presenters to produce different kinds of materials; it is dependent on the kind of presentation / activity that the submitter wants to present for evaluation to the Conference’s Committee. When you submit a proposal through our submission platform, you will be asked to choose one of the categories below.

Also, please note that abstract submission in English is mandatory, but submitters are invited to submit in any other language. If anyone within the Scientific Committee is fluent in that other language and versed in the appropriate field, the non-English submission will be the one to undergo peer review. Also, please note that PowerPoints, Prezis, or other presentation materials used at the conference must be in English. Before attending the event, please check our Guidelines for Academic/Activist Spaces – this is very important.

When preparing your contribution and submission, please try to aim for 18-20 minute presentations (either individually, or per person, in the case of panel presentations).

Academic Contributions

  • Single presentations: abstracts up to 250 words. Submissions should include (where applicable) a theoretical overview, a methodological summary and the main results.
  • Panel presentations: abstracts up to 500 words. Submissions should include a rationale for the panel as a whole, as well as a short description of each sepparate presentation. All the persons involved should be listed as co-authors. The main author / submitter should be the panel convener. This option should also be used in the case of a single presentation that entails the usage of multimedia or performative materials that go over the 20-minute limit for individual presentations. The whole panel will convene for 90 minutes, including time for commentary and questions and answers from the audience.

Please note that the publication of select full papers is being considered / prepared. When there is more information about this, authors will be notified.

Artistic, Activist and Other Contributions

  • Static materials for display: Materials such as images, photographs, pamphlets. The materials and goals should be described in up to 250 words. Please note that there are serious limitations in terms of space available for such content and that we have no means to print materials by ourselves.
  • Short showings of material / performances OR short debates / expositions about a topic: Audio/visual material up to 20 minutes, or performances up to 20 minutes, or single talks up to 20 minutes; should be described and linked up with the main theme of the conference in up to 250 words. Please note that we will prioritize submissions that plan ahead for the discussion and problematization of what is presented.
  • Long showings of material / performances, or groups of showings / performances OR panel discussions: materials / performances / debates / round tables by several people presented as a session in itself, up to 1:30 hours; should be described and linked up with the main theme of the conference in up to 500 words. Please note that we will prioritize submissions that plan ahead for the discussion and problematization of what is presented.

Please note that the publication of select full papers is being considered / prepared. We will work with publications to try and include non-academic contributions too. When there is more information about this, authors will be notified.

Accessibility

For logistic reasons, the conference’s common language will be English, and abstracts must be submitted in English. If you wish so, you can also send us your abstract in another language, provided that you also submit it in English. It is highly recommended (but not mandatory) that presentations during the conference are in English.

The venue is wheelchair-accessible.

If you require a Sign Language interpreter, please contact us via email; unfortunately we cannot guarantee that this will be provided.

During the Conference, (some of the) food served at the coffee breaks will be appropriate for vegans and vegetarians. Please see more information here.

The end of September is usually a warm-ish period in Lisbon, but at night it can get a little cold. Clothing-wise, please come prepared with both fresher and mid-season clothing. You can check 10-day weather forecasts here, by selecting “Lisboa”.

Map, Address, Transportations

From the Airport to the Hotels

Lisbon airport is now served by a subway station, integrated into the Red Line. Most of the hotels referenced by the Conference Organization are very near the conference venue. To reach that area from the Airport, board the Red Line at “Aeroporto”, go all the way to “Saldanha”, switch to the Yellow Line boarding the train towards Odivelas, but disembark at “Campo Pequeno”.

Subway / Bus

One of the fastest ways to get to the Conference is by Subway. The Conference venue sits in between two subway stops from different lines. The Blue Line station is called “Praça de Espanha”; the Yellow Line station is called “Campo Pequeno”.

Main meals

Though pretty late in the Conference planning, we have secured an arrangement with a recently open restaurant inside the Conference campus – COM SABOR. Lisboa . They will be open all throughout Friday (8:00 am – 10:00 pm) and Saturday (8:00 am – 3 pm), and they will open up on Sunday specifically to serve lunch to Conference goers (11:30 am – 3:00 pm).

The restaurant has a wide variety of foods and will be able to cater to vegans, vegetarians and also omnivorous folks.

Meals can be had from 5 to 7 euros.

Options include: soup (vegetable, chicken); Special of the day (meat/fish); Vegan dish, Hamburgers; Pork sandwiches, Steak (“Prego”), Shoarma, Kebab, Pizzas, Pastas, Baguettes, etc.

A pork sandwich + drink = 3,50€, a handmade burguer with fries + drink = from 4,60€, a special of the day = 5,20€, a pizza = from 5,50€, pastas = from 4,95€.

Coffee Breaks

Throughout the conference, there will be coffee breaks provided by the event itself.

Barring any unforeseeable events, we will have food that is fit for vegans, vegetarians and others. If you have any specific dietary requirements, please let a member of the Conference staff know.
